The Sacramento Kings made headlines last week after making a trade for Rudy Gay. That deal was met with a lot of mixed criticism and scratching heads, but when crunching the numbers it made sense. The Kings get a solid piece at small forward even though Gay is prominently overpaid. Gay was better than what they had at the position and brought more to the table.
But no one thought that the Kings were really trying to win games at that point. Gay isn’t a franchise changing player at this juncture and everyone knows it. But, now, there’s rumor that the Kings are looking for one to pair with Demarcus Cousins. And that franchise changer is Rajon Rondo.
There’s a report out that the Boston Celtics are talking a multi-player deal with the Kings for Rondo.
The Celtics are reportedly talking about a multi-player deal with the Sacramento Kings where Rajon Rondo is the centerpiece, as reported by Donny Marshall of the NBC Sports Network and Comcast Sportsnet New England.
There are not a lot of details here, but you can bet a mix of players and picks would return to Boston in this deal. Boston also has rumored to have had discussions as part of a third team in an Omer Asik deal, but now that is a lot of moving parts to fit together.
You’d think that the deal would have to feature a draft pick or two–whether they be future firsts or next year’s first. Rajon Rondo should return soon enough after being cleared for contact last week. Rondo would instantly improve the credibility of the Kings new ownership and desire to win games.
I’d hope that Isaiah Thomas is involved in a deal like this for the Celtics. This deal comes at a weird time in which the Celtics are at the top of the Atlantic division. They’ve played without Rondo so far this season and once he returns, they could mark themselves as a clear favorite; however, I’m not sure if that’s what the Celtics’ brass actually wants to happen.
This could be another case in which Danny Ainge is just fielding calls on Rondo and doing his due diligence. This obviously isn’t the first time that Rondo has been featured in trade rumors and this isn’t the first time he’s been featured in rumors with the Kings. This time, though, things feel real as the big three and Doc Rivers are all gone. We’ll see how things develop with these talks and what actually materializes.
