A new detail of the Boston Celtics’ trade for Derrick White has been determined, as the San Antonio Spurs just moved Blake Wesley in a deal with the Washington Wizards. Wesley was selected with one of the picks that the Celtics traded to the Spurs in the deal for White back in 2021.
During his three years in San Antonio, Wesley never broke out with the Spurs, but he’ll have a new chance to thrive in Washington. Meanwhile, White has been absolutely incredible for the Celtics. He helped them win a championship in 2024 and has emerged as one of the best role players in the league.
And Wesley getting moved to the Wizards adds another detail to the Celtics’ trade to acquire him.
Details of Celtics Derrick White trade
When the Celtics traded for White back in 2021, they sent out quite the haul for a relatively unproven guard. White was solid in San Antonio, but he was nowhere near the player he is now.
Here are the details of the trade at the time:
Celtics get: Derrick White
Spurs get: Josh Richardson, Romeo Langford, 2022 first-round pick, 2028 first-round pick (top-one protected)
That 2022 first-round pick is what turned into Wesley, who has since been moved to the Wizards after spending a few years with the Spurs. Now, the only piece of the puzzle that still remains in San Antonio is the 2028 pick swap that is top-one protected (and if it conveys, it will turn into a 2028 second).
Richardson was traded by the Spurs the very next season, and Langford was out of the league after just one-and-a-half seasons in San Antonio (though he only appeared in 43 games in his only full season there).
Wesley getting traded only makes the deal look like an even bigger win for the Celtics.
Spurs traded Blake Wesley for Kelly Olynyk
Here are the full details of the trade the Spurs just made that shipped out Wesley in a deal to land Olynyk from the Wizards:
Spurs get: Kelly Olynyk
Wizards get: Blake Wesley, Malaki Branham, 2026 second-round pick
The Spurs are clearly trying to be more competitive. Olynyk is a quality backup big man, and after signing another former Celtic, Luke Kornet, in free agency, they have built a great foundation next to Victor Wembanyama.
During Wesley and Branham’s brief time in the NBA, neither turned into much, though they are both still very young. Both are 22 years old.
And now that Wesley has been moved, the White trade they made a few years back has almost been completed.
