In his quest for the Rookie of the Year award, Kelly Olynyk got off to a tremendous start in the Orlando Summer League that the Boston Celtics played in. Although he was a lottery pick, Olynyk took some by surprise with his dominance. He led the Orlando league in scoring with 18 points per game while grabbing 7.8 rebounds per game on 58% shooting.
He finished at the top spot on NBA.com’s rookie ladder and became the early favorite for the ROY award. Well, apparently, that excitement hasn’t died down in the least bit. What’s more, he was voted by 18.2% of his peers to win ROY in the NBA’s annual rookie survey.
In last year’s rookie survey Anthony Davis got a majority of the votes for rookie of the year. He came in first by a wide margin with 47.1% of the votes. Damian Lillard–the actual rookie of the year–came in 2nd place with 17.6% of the votes.
This year, Olynyk came in third behind CJ McCollum and Victor Oladipo who both had 24.2% of the votes. Olynyk did, however, come in first when the players voted on who they believed would have the best career. He tied with Victor Oladipo with 18.2% of the votes.
There’s a lot of hype surrounding Kelly Olynyk’s rookie season in Boston. Hopefully for the Celtics, he’ll be able to live up to it.
