Report: Celtics and Grizzlies discussing Fab Melo for Donte Greene trade

According to reports Boston has been in talks with the Memphis Grizzlies about potentially trading Center Fab Melo. Melo was drafted 22nd overall in last year’s draft. Here’s the report from the CA in Memphis:

The Griz are working to acquire center Fab Melo from the Boston Celtics for the rights to Donte Greene, according to a source with knowledge of the deal.

Memphis would bolster its frontcourt depth, adding a third center to the roster behind starter Marc Gasol and backup Kosta Koufos.

Salaries in the transaction were essentially equal.

Melo still is playing on a rookie contract that pays him $1.3 million this season. Greene’s contract of slightly more than $1 million is non-guaranteed, meaning he must earn a roster spot in October during training camp.

Essentially this is a nothing for nothing trade but Boston has been quite obvious in their lack of faith in Fab. Fab struggled to get playing time last year and spent most of the year playing with the Red Claws. His summer league showing was sub par at best and it just seems like his prospects as a legitimate NBA Center are dwindling.

While there isn’t much value on the court Boston could get from trading for Donte Greene, his non- guaranteed deal would help them very much in trying to get under the luxury tax.

It seems early to give up on a 1st round pick but there is no value in keeping him if his salary is a hinderence to their cap clearing efforts.
