Even though a few days ago Danny Ainge said that there was no doubt that Doc Rivers would return as the coach of the Boston Celtics, the Boston Herald reports that the Celtics are worried because Rivers has not come out and openly admitted that he is going to return for next season.
Steve Bullpet of the Herald has more:
It’s a question with which the Celtics seem to be struggling. According to some folks who have basketball business with the club, there is growing concern that Doc Rivers has yet to make a public declaration he will continue to lead from the bench. He has remained in regular contact with the Celts, discussing the team’s direction for next season and beyond . . . but the definitive word has been yet unheard.
Everyone has been adamant that Rivers will return even though this team is in a rebuilding phase. I lean toward those who do believe that he’ll be back. However, I wouldn’t be surprised if he didn’t return either.
This roster is a pretty flawed one. The success of it hinges on two old guys and an elite non-scoring point guard. Though it isn’t on Rondo that points aren’t generated efficiently or effectively enough, the fact of the matter is that they aren’t.
This roster needs a major overhaul and it should be happening soon. Sticking around for that will be tough for all of us–let alone Rivers.
