The Celts could use a premier perimeter defender. Marquis Daniels was never that man, and since James Posey, there hasn’t been anyone to sick on a hot offensive player when the time comes. Fields would change that. Fields is capable of covering the premier shooting guards in the league and has no problems even with the likes of Dwyane Wade and Kobe Bryant. He would help immensely in the backcourt, and is also an adept three point shooter.
The Knicks were unwilling to part with Fields in the Carmelo Anthony trade, and likely will try to resign him. The know his value in this league, and they don’t want to just let a talent walk that they developed themselves. But the Celtics won’t care, and if Doc Rivers could convince Fields of the possibilities that could occur in green and white, his loyalty to the Knicks may dissipate. Fields realizes that Rivers was a premier defender in his own right and that he could learn a lot from the former All-Star.
Will the Celts make a run at Fields? One would have to assume so. He is only 23 years old and has the size at 6’7″ 215 to cover small forwards, as well. He gets off the floor well and is exciting. It would be an injection of life every time Fields came off the bench, if he didn’t start. I would imagine Fields would be best suited for a sixth man role.
