Well, it looks like a few solid games made up for Von Wafer’s terrible start.
Wafer earned the nod for the Celtics 15th and final roster spot over Stephane Lasme, who had impressed with his athleticism and defense and almost stole the position most had Wafer penciled into ever since he signed this offseason. In the end, questions surrounding Delonte West’s health and early absence had to factor into the decision to keep another guard. And it didn’t hurt that Wafer seemed to regain his shooting touch over the course of the last few preseason games and in a team scrimmage earlier in the week.
The question now is whether Wafer sticks with the club throughout the season. West’s eventual return makes him expendable, and it wouldn’t surprise me if the Celtics went in another direction at that point. But for now, Wafer will remain with the club, and he could get a few minutes here and there over the course of the first few weeks.
For Lasme, this decision likely means a trip back to the D-League, at least for the time being. But he showed enough the last month for someone to take a chance on him this season. Lasme is an NBA player, and he will be back in the big leagues sooner rather than later.
