Trade Rumors: Celtics Close To Trading Courtney Lee to Memphis for Jerryd Bayless

Dec 31, 2013; Boston, MA, USA; Boston Celtics shooting guard Courtney Lee (11) goes to the basket during the first quarter of Atlanta

In an unexpected bit of news to come out right before pregame, Steve Bulpett of the Boston Herald tweeted out that the Celtics were close to trading Courtney Lee for Memphis Guard Jerryd Bayless. It’s been known for awhile now that Ainge has been increasingly trying to shed salary in favor of long term cap flexibility. Meaning guys like Lee and Brandon Bass were both going to be actively shopped.

It’s seems to be a straight forward deal, it’s not official so the exact terms of the deal have not been fully released but I don’t think any other pieces from Boston will be leaving — Memphis may have to throw in one more minor contract to make the salaries work, but I haven’t checked the trade machine to see if that’s the case.

Jerryd Bayless is a FA this summer, so I can see why Danny would want to acquire such an asset to free up some cap space. For Memphis, I can see why they would be eager to pick up Lee, when certainly no one else in the league was getting Danny on the phone for him. Memphis is in dire need of 3pt shooting and acquiring a 44% shooter from deep could really help their push for one of the final playoff spots when Marc Gasol returns.

It’s not official yet but numerous people with sources close to he situation have claimed that the deal is all but finalized.
