Here we go people, the start of the trade rumor season has begun. Talks are swirling all over the place with them centered around the “Omer Asik Sweepstakes”. With Dwight Howard singing with Houston and effectively making Asik unnecessary for the Rockets, Omer reportedly demanded to be traded. The Rockets set their own deadline of December 19th to trade the unhappy center.

Its been known for awhile that Ainge would eventually make the Celtics known as major players in the trade market and according to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports, the Celtics have entered as one of the primary landing spots for the defensive specialist, Omer Asik.

The talks, according to Wojnarowski, have been centered around Boston shipping off Brandon Bass, Courtney Lee, and an unspecified 2014 1st round pick. Ainge seems intent on shedding the long term contracts of Bass and Lee in favor of Asik who will $15M this year and next year — though if I remember correctly, the cap hit for his contract would only be $8M.

Asik is a less than stellar offensive player whose career TS% of .549 isn’t great but his defense is the biggest draw to his game. Asik made a name for himself in Chicago where he backed up Noah and was rewarded by Houston, who he played a pivotal role in helping them get to the playoffs. On the Celtics he could really help shore down an already good defense under Brad Stevens. The talks are just getting started and nothing at this point is a done deal.
