The Boston Celtics lost to the Memphis Grizzlies, but managed to make the game seem a lot closer than it did. The Celtics had a fourth quarter explosion for 34 points, but the Grizzlies did enough to match with a 31 point quarter of their own. Really, the Celtics were wrung out for most of the three preceding quarters, only managing to put together 59 points before then.
The Celtics didn’t push the pace enough in the first three quarters but they managed to make the game an up and down one by the time the fourth quarter came around. Jared Sullinger had himself a game scoring 23 points and snatching 12 rebounds. Sullinger has been a pleasant surprise for everyone in the organization this season. After missing most of last season due to back issues, he’s managed to come back and be the Celtics top player.
Sullinger was unquestionably the top performer for the Celtics tonight. He did a fair enough job handling the paint tonight and he put up great offensive numbers. Jeff Green played well, too, scoring 26 points throughout the game and grabbing seven rebounds.
But the Grizzlies had a great, all-around team game in almost every facet of it. Jerryd Bayless, in particular, had a stellar game scoring 22 points in only 21 minutes. He got to the free throw line for 11 shots and made nine of them. On a night where Zach Randolph couldn’t pull offense out of his back pocket, Bayless was the spark plug that the Grizzlies needed to come out on top.
Ed Davis also gave the Grizzlies 11 points on only five shots along with snatching seven boards in only 24 minutes. The bench was the key to the Grizzlies game tonight and the Celtics just didn’t have it in them to stop them.
The Celtics will try their luck against on Friday against the Cleveland Cavaliers. Hopefully, they’ll be able to get themselves a win.
