Bill Russell is a revered around the world by basketball fans and sports fans in general as one of the greatest winners of all time. His 11 championships have yet to be matched by a single player who has picked up a basketball since he retired. He’s glorified in Celtics lore as one of their greatest players ever.
That doesn’t put him above the law, though. Russell was arrested this week for toting a firearm into an airport in Seattle. He was given a citation for bringing a loaded firearm into a prohibited area of the airport according to Perry Cooper, a Seattle Police Department Spokesman.
According to CNN, the TSA said that they found the gun during the screening process of carry-on bags.
“Firearms, ammunition, firearm parts and realistic replicas of firearms are always prohibited in carry-on baggage. However, these items can be transported in checked baggage provided the traveler declares them to the airline during the ticket counter check-in process,” a TSA statement said.
I’m not really sure what was going on with Bill when this happened. What did he have the gun for? Was it for protection? We honestly don’t know at this point. Unfortunately, still, he had it and he was in violation of the law.
We all make mistakes and Bill Russell is no different. He is human, and from what we know, he’s still a good, ethical man. But this just goes to show you that no one is above the law–and that’s the way that it should be. I’m sure that Bill would say the same.
