Brad Stevens has gotten a ringing endorsement from many Celtics names, fans and even former players. He’s done all of the right things to ease himself into the family and has seemingly found his comfort zone with the Celtics media.
Now, Stevens has one more endorsement. One that, er, may or may not sit well with Celtics fans. Rick Pitino gave a vote of confidence to Stevens during a press conference for the Basketball Hall of Fame on Saturday. Hat tip to NBC Sports for giving us the information.
“It’s all about your personality….Brad Stevens is a perfect fit, perfect, couldn’t be more of a perfect fit to go from college to the pros. He runs pro offense. He runs a pro defense.”
“It’s so foreign. It’s such a foreign game, the pros to college. That is an adjustment that’s difficult to make unless you’ve been there. Brad is one of the few people I think can do it. I think Coach K can do it because of his Olympic experience. But it’s very difficult to do unless you have experience as an assistant.”
Celtics fans don’t really hold Pitino or his opinions near and dear to their hearts. Pitino’s tenure as the Celtics head coach was less than remarkable. He went 102-146 in just a bit over three seasons as a Celtics coach. They missed out on Tim Duncan with Pitino, never had a record that was at least .500, and just had a really bad falling out.
For Pitino to say that Stevens can make this jump probably doesn’t hold much ground with most fans, but Pitino is a National Championship caliber coach. He also had a successful tenure with the New York Knicks before coaching the Boston Celtics.
I’m sure that, at this point, Pitino knows what he is talking about when it comes to coaching. So, while we shouldn’t take this as an absolute at this point, we should take solace in the fact that Stevens is well respected by many good coaches–including Pitino.
