The NBA has chimed in on the possible deal between the Boston Celtics and the Los Angeles Clippers. The way the deal is currently constructed would result in the trade being blocked. The league prohibits any trade or signing of a player being made with a deal on the side. They’d likely block the trade of Deandre Jordan to the Celtics for Kevin Garnett because of this.

Marc Stein of ESPN reports:

This means that the deal cannot be completed as currently constructed. Because of the deal that would send Rivers rights to the Clippers for the two draft picks, this deal is not valid. The Celtics and Clippers must prove that these are two separate deals. If they agree upon the deal, it may not take the same form but the pieces included currently should still be included.
