Former Celtic Cedric Maxwell joined CSNNE’s Mike Felger on Sunday to discuss the future of the Boston Celtics. Take a look at what Maxwell had to say about the trio of Doc Rivers, Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce:
What was the most surprising about what Maxwell said is that it makes sense. He thinks that Rivers will take a leave of absence, the Celtics will buy Pierce’s contract out and Kevin Garnett will then choose to play somewhere else because Pierce is gone. Here it is in more detail via CSNNE
“I think Doc will take a leave of absence, he will go on. I think Paul Pierce, the team has an option right now on his contract at $16 million they can pay him $5 [million]. I think the financial part is going to [come] in. And as Kevin Garnett said, if Paul doesn’t come back, I think Kevin weighs his options and says he wants to go someplace else.”
This is essentially the worst way that the Garnett era in Celtics history could end. The Celtics would end up losing two key players and a coach and be forced into starting a rebuild that probably should’ve taken place a long time ago.
We’ll see what happens. If Maxwell’s prediction comes to fruition, the Celtics could be in for a long stint in the lottery.
