Damian Lillard will be named the Rookie of the Year on Wednesday after a stellar rookie season in Portland.
The 22 year old rookie averaged 19.0 points per game and 6.5 assists per game in 82 games this season. He shot 43% from the field and 37% from beyond the arch while taking 6.1 per game.
He swept the Western Conference Rookie of the Month award this season and won the Skills Challenge at All-Star weekend. He showed a lot of poise as a rookie this season and kept the Trailblazers in the fight for the playoffs for a short stint this season.
In my Rookie Predictions post this past season, I had Lillard as my rookie of the year and a lot of that actually came into fruition. He played well because of the team around him and his own natural ability. He was really a perfect fit for this team.
Looking back, that’s just about the only thing I was correct about. Most of my rookie predictions for the first team and second team are off–keep in mind there’s only one rookie team.
Also, I had Jared Sullinger as an honorable mention instead of on a team outright. He performed way beyond expectation this season much like Lillard. If he had stayed healthy all season, you wonder how things would’ve turned out for the Celtics.
Lillard really deserves this award and is rightfully getting it. Congratulations to him and the Portland Trailblazers.
