Last night, ESPN’s Chris Broussard reported that the San Antonio Spurs are looking to trade DeJuan Blair who has disappeared on the Spurs roster. Blair is no longer part of the main rotation, and for San Antonio, they only want to dump his salary. But I’m sure they’d like something in return. It has been reported that the Boston Celtics might have interest in Blair.
From Chris Broussard -
SA offered D Blair to Detroit but nothing. Hear Boston, Miami, Portland could have interest.
Boston is in need of another big man with Jared Sullinger done for the season after having back surgery. Blair could be a good fit if he gets the playing time, and being a veteran, Doc Rivers is more likely to play him than a young guy from the D-League. Another bonus if the Celtics acquire DeJuan Blair, is that there is no need to be concerned about him tearing an ACL because he doesn’t have one in either leg.
Boston Celtics in need of a guard. Shelvin Mack a possibility?
With the Celtics in the market for a back up point guard after Leandro Barbosa tore his left ACL last night in Charlotte, Shelvin Mack has become the front runner to take the place of that now vacant guard position. In the D-League, Mack has averaged 19.6 points per game, nearly 5 rebounds, and 7.6 assists with the Maine Red Claws. Now granted, Doc Rivers is not a coach who gives young players minutes, but even though it’s the D-League, Mack is proving himself to be that candidate to take Barbosa’a spot.
Earlier this week there was also speculation that Boston might be interested in signing former Celtic guard Delonte West. Today, it has been reported that the Celtics are not considering or interested in signing West.
There aren’t many options out there in free agency when it comes to guards other than Baron Davis, Gilbert Arenas, and Michael Redd. Danny Ainge has a lot to think about in the upcoming week before the trade deadline. The Celtics aren’t desperate yet, but another injury to a key player would be devastating.
