The writing has been on the wall for a few months now and only now is it beginning to sink in for basketball fans around the globe. Sidelined with a calf injury, Shaquille O’Neal has been unable to run calling many to believe that his brief six minute run a few weeks ago could very well be the last we’ll ever see of Shaquille O’Neal in an NBA uniform.
Said a source, who requested anonymity “If he were to come back, it would have to be a miraculous recovery, and at his age (he turned 39 on March 6) and physical condition, the Celtics have planned accordingly.”
The Celtics could realistically get by rounds 1 and 2 without needing Shaq as neither the New York Knicks or Miami Heat have a legitimate center on their roster. Things will then get a little tougher assuming the Chicago Bulls are waiting in round three. Regardless, given that the NBA excessively drags out the playoffs, Shaq could have potentially another month of rest before he would be needed. This may be an extreme case of the “glass half full” approach, but we really have nothing else we can do. The Tobin bridge is already pretty crowded with all those Red Sox and Bruins fans.
