NBA Trade Deadline Deals: Boston Celtics

The NBA trade deadline is just over twenty five days away and we thought we’d take a look at some of the deadline deals that took place over the last twenty or so years involving the Boston Celtics.

Danny Ainge was on WEEI the other day and was saying that he does not see the Celtics as major players at this year’s trade deadline. The Celtics do not have a need for a starter and that takes them out of a blockbuster type of deal, but any GM worth his salt is always looking for a good deal to improve his team without mortgaging the future. The age of the Celtics and their injuries this season call for a deep/capable bench that will get called upon to make a contribution.

Shockingly though, history shows that the Celtics are not major deadline deal traders. The Celtics have made only 8 deadline trades since 1987. Let’s review:

Celtics send JR Giddons, Bill Walker and Eddie House to Knicks for Nate Robinson and Marcus Landry

In a three team deal, the Celtics send Patrick O’Bryant to the Raptors, the Kings send a second round pick (2014) to the Celtics and the Raptors send Will Solomon to the Kings.

Celtics send Jiri Welsch to the Cavs for a 2007 first round draft pick (Rudy Fernandez).

Celtics send Gary Payton, Tom Gugliotta, Michael Stewart and a 2006 first round draft pick (Rajon Rondo) to the Hawks for Antoine Walker and cash.

Yes, Rajon Rondo. On August 19, 2005 the Hawks sent Boris Diaw, the Celtics 2006 first round pick (Rondo) and a 2008 first round draft pick (Robin Lopez) to the Suns for Joe Johnson. During the 2006 NBA Draft, the Suns traded Brian Grant and Rajon Rondo to the Celtics for a 2007 first round draft pick (Rudy Fernandez).

In a three team deal the Celtics send Mike James to the Pistons, and send Chris Mills to the Hawks. The Hawks send Rasheed Wallace to the Pistons. The Pistons send Zeljko Rebraca, Bob Sura and a 2004 first round pick (Josh Smith) to the Hawks, and send Lindsey Hunter, Chucky Atkins and a 2004 first round draft pick (Tony Allen) to the Celtics.

Celtics send Shammond Williams and a 2003 second round draft pick (Sani Becirovic) to the Nuggets for Mark Bryant and Mark Blount.

Celtics send Andrew DeClercq and a 1999 first round draft pick (Andre Miller) to the Cavs for Vitaley Potapenko.

Celtics send Danny Ainge and Brad Lohaus to the Kings for Joe Kleine and Ed Pinckney.
