The Celtics have a big decision to make on the status of backup guard Von Wafer’s contract. As per league rules, the Celtics have until January 10th to waive or keep Von Wafer. Wafer, who signed a non guaranteed contract this past off season, would have his contract become guaranteed should he remain on the roster on the 10th.
Up until a few weeks ago, it would have been a no brainer that Wafer would have been waived. Up until then, his greatest contribution was a well publicized fight with Delonte West. Things have changed recently and you could see Doc believing in him more. Doc has been using him more often in his rotations and you could see Wafer starting to buy into the system and make a contribution on the defensive side. Wafer chipped in nicely this past week scoring 10 points against the Timberwolves when the team clearly needed a boost due to their recent bout with injuries.
The Celtics have to decide whether keeping Wafer is worth more than the increased flexibility they’ll gain from waiving him. The Celtics are currently at the 15 player roster maximum.
Around the league, the Bulls cut John Lucas III, the T’Wolves cut Sundiata Gaines and the Warriors cut Rodney Carney. All three players were in the same non-garunteed/guaranteed contract limbo.
