Play Within Your Own Game
I am not a coach, but it is easy to notice the Celtics heroism this year. At points, games become more of a self centered effort, than one that will help the team out the most. Now dont get me wrong, every player on the C’s is playing for the “team”. Everyone wants the team to succeed, however, in their attempt to make the team succeed, they focus on themselves.
Let me give you an example: When things go bad, and 15 point leads start to slip, every individual tries to make the difference and be the hero that will pull the Celtics back up. We have pulled out some ugly wins this way, and lost some ugly games this way. From time to time, Paul Pierce can take the game over. He can do it less now with his age, so it is not quite the way we want to finish out a game. As soon as the Celtics come out in the third quarter, up double digits, and I see Pierce taking the ball at the foul line, I know its going to get bad.
It is not only Pierce, though. This breaks down into every player on the team. Ray Allen, whether it be an attempt to prove his worth, or an attempt to pick the team back up, has taken extremely unusual shots. We all know he takes difficult threes, and makes them, but he has taken a lot of unwarranted threes this year. Eddie House is the same way. You have noticed, as have I, that Eddie is taking shots that are even difficult for him (and those are hard to find). He has even been driving and pulling up lately. This is good at times, and it would be a good thing for him to add to this team, but he back rims them alot, so its not exactly our first option.
The list goes on and on: Kevin Garnett, Sheed, etc., etc., etc. The Celtics can NOT go away from playing like a team through passing the ball. They no longer are a bunch of players who can go out and do it themselves. This team will live and die by their ability to pass. The defense is there, they just need to find the offense, and that clearly comes through ball movement.
