NBA All Star Weekend is by far the most entertaining all star break of any of the 3 major sports. Friday started off with the Sophomore vs. Rookie challenge, and Celebrity All Stars game. The NBA follows that up on Saturday with a good game of HORSE, Skills Challenge, 3-Point Competition, Slam Dunk Contest, and the Shooting Stars competition. Then everything is brought to a close when all of the best players in the league take center stage on Sunday night to put on a show.
The MLB game has meaning to it, yet it is just like any other game. The final score in the MLB All Star game always ends up the same as it would any other day: 5-4 or 3-2. They can’t do anything that would hit the entire top 10 on ESPN. It is the same old thing: Pitch the ball, hit the ball, field the ball. The special event for baseball is the homerun derby. Sure this can be kind of interesting, for the first couple of rounds. Then you realize all you are watching is the ball get hit far distances. That is the only thing that changes. As good as it gets is comeback stories like Josh Hamilton. If you don’t have that, what do you have?
Then in the NFL you have the debacle that has become the Pro Bowl game. First it was the week after the season, when no one really cared to watch because the season had already come to a close with the Super Bowl. Now, you have it a week before the Super Bowl, where great players on great teams who are in the Super Bowl dont play because (duh) they have better things to worry about. Nevermind that the AFC had who? Matt Schaub starting the game. Again, nothing occurs in the Pro Bowl much different than a normal NFL game. What can they do, throw a pass behind their back? I dont know.
Although I really wish there were better participants in this years Dunk Contest, I think everything else should be great. Rajon Rondo will hopefully pull off some crazy shots in the game of HORSE, and hopefully Pierce can put out a better showing in the 3 Point Contest than he did last time. It is always good to have little bragging rights like those small victories that represent the team.
