“And another one gone, and another one gone, another one bites the dust.” – Queen
Could there really be a better song to symbolize the Celtics recent injury problems? I really don’t think so. Today another one has bitten the dust and is not expected to play in tonight’s game against the Hawks. According to Chris Forsberg, ESPN Boston, Tony Allen did not participate in the morning shootaround because of some form of sickness.
But now guard Tony Allen, who filled in so admirably when Paul Pierce was sidelined for five games due to a right knee infection, is battling an illness of his own and did not take part in the shootaround.
If someone told us Celtics fans at the beginning of the year that Tony Allen was going to be unavailable for a game we probably would have said who cares. Now that Tony Allen has somewhat proved himself to be an asset this loss could mean more than people realize.
Right now Paul Pierce is continuing to recover from his previously infected knee, and can not afford to play in the upwards of forty minutes a game. Without Allen, along with Marquis Daniels, this leaves a huge hole in the rotation. Someone is going to have to step it up to take some of these minutes from Pierce.
Who is likely to see increased playing time without Tony Allen? Our first guess would be Brian Scalabrine. Although he hasn’t had a very good year up to now, he always seems to be the one Doc goes to in times like these. There is also the options of J.R Giddens, who saw starters minutes recently, and the official Celtics bench warmer, Bill Walker. There has been a lot of lobbying going on in Celtics nation to get Billy some playing time. Could tonight be the night, we can only wait in see.
In other news Celtics guard Eddie House did participate in this morning’s shootaround and is expected to lace em up tonight.
