The Boston Celtics announced today that they will send rookie guard Lester Hudson to their D-League affiliate, the Maine Red Claws. Hudson was the Celtics 58th pick in this past year’s draft and hasn’t been able to get much playing time at the NBA level.
Here is the official release from the Boston Celtics:
“The Boston Celtics announced today that guard Lester Hudson has been assigned to the Maine Red Claws of the NBA Development League. Hudson is the team’s second assignment to the NBA Development League this season.”
The good news for Hudson is the D-League team is located in Portland, Maine, only about an hour and a half away from Boston. This seems a lot better than last year’s scenario of having to ship a player to Utah to get some playing time.
Lester will join Celtics forward Bill Walker on the Red Claws roster. At the moment the Red Claws are 5-1 on the season and will only get better with the addition of Lester. The reasons for sending Lester to Portland were similar to the reasons why I supported the move in an article on Sunday before the move was announced. The main reason being that the team wants to see him get some playing time, and right now in Bostonwiththe Celtics depth, that isn’t happening. Doc Rivers said the following about the move (via the Boston Globe):
“just to get him some games. I don’t like our young guys to go on these stretches without playing games. We’re going to bring him back but I think that will help him.’’
This is pretty much the exact point that I made Sunday. Why just let a 26-year old rookie just sit on the bench and only play him in garbage time? There really isn’t an answer to that, and I think this move should have been made earlier than it was. But anyways, they made the move and I am glad. I will be returning to Maine for Christmas break and hope to catch a Red Claws. Hopefully I will be able to see Lester and Bill Walker both doing work in the D-League.
