Boston Celtics: 3 Cs that’d need to be included in any Donovan Mitchell trade
Boston Celtics player #3 that’d need to be included in a Donovan Mitchell trade: Jaylen Brown
As I’m sure you’ve caught on by now, it’s going to take an all-in effort to land Donovan Mitchell in any deal. Key contributors will be necessary because of the status of Mitchell’s deal–four years of team control from 2022-23 to 2024-25 with a player option in 2025-26–and the most pivotal potential loss in such a swap would be Jaylen Brown.
While the two have a lighthearted friendship that was on full display down in the Lake Buena Vista bubble back in 2020, they would need to switch places in order for an explosive Mitchell-Jayson Tatum offensive 1-2 punch to ever exist.
Luckily, Tatum also has a great respect for Mitchell and has shared as much about his former Team USA teammate:
"“That’s my guy,” Tatum said. “Known him for a while, competed against him for a long time even in college and high school. We really spent a lot of time together with Team USA. I love his game. That’s my guy.”"
Losing Brown’s off-court leadership will be a very tough thing to deal with, and seeing the press get what they clearly want so bad (a ‘Jays’ split) would be unsatisfying for fans of the current Celtics All-Star duo.
But Mitchell could well elevate the C’s ceiling and move them closer to Banner 18 if the current roster isn’t quite there yet.
