Why the Boston Celtics do it

This deal would have to be timed in a way that would make it two separate deals that would utilize the Evan Fournier TPE on one of the returning big men in this trade.

Either way, this move would similarly bolster the frontcourt and add two guys that could form one of the most effective second unit big man duos in the NBA.

Marvin Bagley has been the subject of trade rumors all season. With Domantas Sabonis now in tow in Sacramento, his role is solidified as never being a starter at his natural power forward position.

Similarly, Sabonis’ arrival also makes Richaun Holmes expendable, and he in particular is worth giving up a first-round pick for.

Why the Sacramento Kings do it

The Kings need to live with their decision to trade away a talent like Tyrese Haliburton, and part of that living has to do with further tweaking the roster to make all the pieces fit.

In the process, it may be tough. The Sabonis trade could have been a future-focused decision, considering the pieces may not fit right away and they are already 2.5 games behind the #10 seed in the NBA Play-in race.

Such is the reason why a first-round pick is returned. Josh Richardson provides veteran leadership for the 2022-23 season, for which he will still be under contract.
