Boston Celtics C Enes Kanter

I mentioned Enes Kanter as someone we expected Bruno Fernando to be competing against for backup minutes and the reason that hasn’t happened isn’t solely on the shoulders of Fernando.

Kanter himself has been mostly absent from the action during the C’s first five games of the 2021-22 season. He’s played just five minutes so far, even with Al Horford missing two games due to COVID-19 and scheduled rest.

Kanter has been more of an off-court presence, particularly with his rantings against Nike regarding their silence on matters concerning the Chinese government:

"“Nike remains vocal about injustice here in America, but when it comes to China, Nike remains silent,” Kanter said. “You do not address police brutality in China, you do not speak about discrimination against the LGBTQ community, you do not say a word about the oppression of minorities in China, you are scared to speak up. Who makes the shoes in China? Do you even know? There are so many forced labor factories in China.”"

Kanter has even gone after China directly after they banned Cs games from the airwaves in the country.

The on-court crickets surrounding his 2021-22 performance, and hopefully not these extra-curricular humanitarian efforts, could be why Brad Stevens would resort to cutting the offensively gifted but defensively inept Kanter to clear up a roster spot.
