Boston Celtics’ Marcus Smart trade target #3: Christian Wood

Much in the same vein of trading Smart for James Wiseman, the Boston Celtics could could upgrade the frontcourt with a cost-controlled big man with the ability to stretch the floor and finish inside in pursuing a Christian Wood trade.

Wood is further along in his development than Wiseman, but he comes from a far humbler beginning. Despite similarly attending a Group of 5 program like Wiseman, Wood was not a highly-touted prospect coming out of college.

In fact, Wood went undrafted and was even left on draft night by his (thankfully) now-ex-girlfriend. The jokes on her, though, since Wood signed a $41 million deal in the offseason.

Even if that is a life-changing amount of money for 99.99% of the world, Wood’s deal is a bargain relative to his talents. Taking his $14 million annual figure in exchange for Smart–who figures to earn at least $3 million more annually when his next contract is paid after he turns 28–would be an efficient way to acquire a 25-year-old with star potential.

Houston could use Smart since they don’t own their own pick in 2022 and have no incentive to lose.
