Boston Celtics’ Marcus Smart trade target #2: James Wiseman

The Golden State Warriors have long been enamored with the idea of adding Marcus Smart to their lineup. In fact, last offseason, there was plenty of chatter about the Cs and Dubs doing business together with Smart and the #2 overall pick as primary trade chips.

The idea makes even more sense now that the #2 pick has manifested into former Memphis center James Wiseman. Year #1 for Wiseman did not go according to any optimistic plans, and the rookie proved to be an ill-fitting big in Steve Kerr’s pace-and-space offensive schemes.

Robert Williams–and even Tristan Thompson’s recent play–has made the need for a big man far less pressing. That said, buying low on a guy many saw as a transformational center might be the kind of gamble reshuffling the rest of the deck for.

Golden State adding Smart would allow the team to downsize and deploy Draymond Green, Andrew Wiggins, and Klay Thompson in the frontcourt while sticking opposing point guards to allow Steph Curry to focus most of his energy on the offensive end.

A defensive in-and-out duo of Smart and Green would be fearsome, but Wiseman reaching his potential alongside the Jays is an even scarier thought.
