Boston Celtics potential imminent cut #2: Luke Kornet

Just like Wagner, Luke Kornet was part of the Daniel Theis trade haul at the trade deadline. Also like Wagner, Kornet has not earned a steady rotation role in his short stay with the Celtics so far, and that could be a harbinger of bad news for the former Vanderbilt big.

Kornet has collected four DNP-CDs in the last four games, which is somewhat puzzling considering he at least outplayed Wagner when the seven-footer was seeing consistent minutes. Kornet had four games where he scored four points or more, and even averaged nine points in his first two contests.

Things have cooled off since then considerably, as he shot just 3-11 in the last three games he played in before his banishment from the rotation.

That said, the jury is not yet out on the seven-footer.

My coeditor Mark Nilon believes Kornet could make an impact in the playoffs with a strong finish to this season:

"The concept of having a guy like him in tow heading into the postseason makes a ton of sense for, not only would his 7-2 frame fill the team’s need for size within the frontcourt, but his score-first mentality and floor spacing abilities could come in handy off the bench for their 20th ranked offensive rated second unit."

I personally believe that ship has sailed.

Ainge was active at the trade deadline, and he got a legitimate difference-maker in Evan Fournier. He didn’t when he acquired the aforementioned bigs, but he could make amends by cutting one (or both) and signing an impact veteran like Isaiah Thomas or DeMarcus Cousins.
