Boston Celtics free agent replacement #1: Tony Snell

Tony Snell isn’t a direct replacement for Evan Fournier in the sense of assuming his exact position on the totem pole in the lineup. Fournier has come over to Boston as a 20-point-per-game second unit scoring machine.

Snell has never come close to the 18.6 points per game marker that Fournier has reached this season, but that wouldn’t be the point of filling Fournier’s roster spot with the UNM product. Snell comes at a much lower rate than Fournier, and provides more defensive stopping power in the minutes he’d be taking over from the Frenchman.

Shooting an otherworldly 57% from the 3-point line, Snell has started 18 games due to the absences of De’Andre Hunter, Bogdan Bogdanovic, and Cam Reddish for spurts this season.

For the Cs, finding snipers to surround Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown would be the best way to make things easier for the Boston Celtics superstars. It’s far easier to assist a 3-point shot than it is to find a back-door cutter against a packed paint.

While Snell may be known to most on Twitter for one of his off-days, mature fans–and more importantly the Hawks coaching staff–understand that the Los Angeles native provides efficient value.

Particularly if the Celtics can get him for less than his $11 million salary he’s collecting from Atlanta. He’s a cheap alternative to Fournier, who could be a good backup option for a team that misses out on stars this offseason.
