Boston Celtics Sweet 16 prospect to monitor #2: Davion Mitchell

Davion Mitchell is the engine of the dominant Baylor offense that has run roughshod over the Big 12 in 2020-21 and picked up one-sided non-conference victories over the Pac-12’s Washington and the #2-seeded (at the time) Illinois Fighting Illini.

As the pass-oriented Baylor backcourt option, Butler’s job is to set the tempo for the Bears and set the table for teammates. He has elite isolation skills for a college guard and has NBA-like fluidity…so much so that he’s been confused for NBA guard Donovan Mitchell by Portland Trailblazers superstar Damian Lillard:

Being compared to the best offensive player on the NBA’s best team is quite the compliment, and the Cs should aim to not miss out on the next Donovan Mitchell as they did on the first one.

Boston Celtics Sweet 16 prospect to monitor #3: Jared Butler

Michell’s teammate, Jared Butler, is technically Baylor’s point guard, but his game is more scoring-focused. Butler’s 3-point efficiency is a tad lower than Mitchell’s but that’s because he takes over six long-range bombs per game.

He makes 41% of them. That sort of efficiency at that volume will translate to shooting excellence in the pros, and the Cs could always use more backcourt talent considering the soon-to-be expiring deals of Marcus Smart and Kemba Walker in 2022 and 2023.
