Pros of the Boston Celtics signing Blake Griffin

The Boston Celtics roster isn’t one filled with versatile big men. While Tristan Thompson, Daniel Theis, and Robert Williams can all capably protect the rim, none of them are simultaneously rim-runners and floor-stretchers quite like Griffin.

In 2018-19, an All-Star season for the Oklahoma product, Griffin shot 36% from beyond the arc in seven shot attempts per game. While that number has fallen the past two years, so have the Pistons’ intentions of making the postseason.

In terms of rim-running, Griffin was one of the all-time finishers of alley-oops and putbacks during his prime. He may not have as much bounce as he used to, but there’s still some lift in Griffin’s legs.

He’s just 31, after all.

The key ingredient Griffin brings the Cs is variety. Boston’s roster has been dragging their feet through the mud in 2020-21, relying on the individual talents of Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum to buoy the offense.

Griffin is a proven playmaker who has averaged as many as six assists per game…which just so happens to also be the career-high of Boston Celtics floor general Kemba Walker.

There’s room for another playmaker on the Cs, especially one that could potentially come as cheap as Griffin would. If he can see the Celtics as the best landing spot to find his next (and potentially last) big contract in free agency, a match could be beneficial for Boston.
