Cons of the Boston Celtics signing Blake Griffin

On the flip side, there’s the potential of a Griffin signing being a negative for all parties involved. There are several different reasons why that could unfold.

The first is the proverbial totem pole. At current, Tatum is at the top of the totem pole. Jaylen Brown is clearly second-in-command. Then there’s max-contract point guard Kemba Walker, who needs his isolation touches too.

Already, that’s three different roadblocks to Griffin getting the touches he might need to really show out and earn that last big contract. Then, there are the Marcus Smart games that see the emotional guard let loose from the 3-point line. Not to mention Payton Pritchard’s development, which will be prioritized over any midseason acquisition’s desire to get rich (and possibly skip town).

Griffin’s monetary interests may not match up with the role Brad Stevens would be able to offer him role-wise. While Stevens could deploy a hyper-athletic forward to spruce up the second unit, Griffin likely wants starter minutes.

That’s not in the Cs best interest to winning titles.

That he has never been known as much of a defensive ace isn’t positive evidence for Boston holding up against top-five offenses like the Brooklyn Nets and Milwaukee Bucks in the postseason. Things could once again get ugly if Griffin doesn’t see the floor like he wants to.

With all of these things in mind, the prospect of Griffin taking a minimum deal with the Boston Celtics over joining an offensive juggernaut in Brooklyn that could inflate his stats–all while potentially being compensated with the Nets’ disabled player exception created by Spencer Dinwiddie’s ACL tear–doesn’t sound likely.

And that is probably for the best.

Verdict: Hard pass from the Boston Celtics
