Daniel Theis

While the “War on Theis” became a major point of contention for Boston Celtics fans, the fact is that Daniel Theis did not pass the Bam Adebayo test in the Eastern Conference finals. The thinking was always that the biggest drawback for the Cs would be their lack of a top-line center, and that talk mostly died down after Boston swept Joel Embiid‘s Philadelphia 76ers out of the playoffs and they snuck past the Toronto Raptors.

In Game 6, Theis’ impact was muted. He scored just six points on three shots, and while he demonstrated value on the glass, Robert Williams looks like he can become a DeAndre Jordan-esque two-way threat…making Theis’ long-term outlook foggy.

Armed with a $5 million player option for the 2020-21 season, Theis can play out one more year before the league is able to figure out its cap situation or test the market now in search of a multi-year contract with either the Celtics or a new team.

His free-agent market might not be robust, but Theis’ trade value skyrocketed this season as the starter on a top-five offense and defense. Look for Ainge to potentially take advantage of that and find a stealth suitor for Theis.
