Let’s Talk Celtics Trade Rumors

While we’re getting ready for today’s game, it’s time to discuss some Boston Celtics trade rumors!

Last week, Jeff Green voiced his frustrations over the Celtics’ 4-8 record. Perhaps the consistently close losses have taken a toll on Green. As a fan, while it’s refreshing to see how well the C’s are keeping up with top tier teams, the slew of fourth quarter collapses has also been emotionally taxing to watch. What’s significant about Green expressing his irritation is that it conveniently happened at a time the player’s trade value was reported to equal Rajon Rondo’s.

The Celtics are in a precarious position with both players entering what could be free agency. It’s Rondo’s last year in what has been a generous contract for the Celtics, so now it’s either trade him or let him walk unless Danny Ainge is delusional enough to think he’ll stay.

While Jeff Green has a player option for next year, so he could potentially walk if he doesn’t have a reason to stay. In other words, TRADE HIM NOW! When you have a player who has been legendarily inconsistent finally getting some attention around the league for his consistency, you need to trade him. Whether he’s your primary wing defender and scorer or not, GM’s dream of the day historically unstable players are at peek market value.

The problem is while plenty of teams could use a swiss-army knife like Jeff Green with no personality issues (he would be a dream-come-true for an underperforming Clippers team – replacing the woeful Matt Barnes), those teams probably don’t have what Ainge would want in return. Thus, teams would most likely rather pay him during free agency. So Green might be in for a long, frustrating season. But as much as I like seeing him succeed in green, he’s about the last Celtic I’ll feel bad for.

Rajon Rondo, however, has lived on the trade block ever since becoming a formidable point guard in this league, so I wouldn’t be surprised if he was looking forward to either free agency or being traded to a playoff contender. And like Green, Rondo is a piece that could help just about any team without an existing All-Star point guard. Sacramento has been related to Rondo trade rumors for a while. The caveat with the Kings was that any trade for Rondo would be contingent on him resigning in the summer. But with the Kings hot out of the gate and DeMarcus Cousins playing as well as anyone, maybe Rondo would reconsider.

Though it was dismissed rather quickly, I still can’t help but think a Rondo for Kyrie Irving trade would be phenomenal. While Kyrie could be as selfish as he wished on this C’s team, Rondo would be the distributor Cleveland is looking for. And even if Ainge didn’t think Irving was a good fit, he could turn him into some nice young prospects.

More than most rebuilding teams, the Celtics’ future changes have potential to make large reverberations within the league. Along with Rondo and Green, don’t be surprised if Brandon Bass gets some potential suitors in the mix. All three of these players are pluggable pieces ripe for playoff teams.
