Happy Humpday, Hardwood Houdini fans! (And fans of the letter ‘h’!)
As the Boston Celtics prepare to face the Charlotte Bobcats tonight at the TD Garden, with the hopes of running their win streak to five and in so doing pushing their record above .500 for the first time all season, my thoughts turn to head coach Brad Stevens and the job he has done so far.
While the season is still quite young, and even though he is in a town that expects championships, not moral victories, there can be no arguing that Stevens currently has the Celtics playing basketball at a competitive level that few, if any, fans or pundits thought possible. With the exception of their opening night loss to Toronto, the Celtics have held leads in the fourth quarter of every single game that they have played, and their current four-game winning streak is probably three games longer than many of us would have predicted.
Is this team a championship-caliber team? No. Is this roster going to be the same roster we see next season? While some players will remain, there is a good chance that this roster is going to undergo many changes between now and then, so Stevens isn’t doing such a great job that Danny Ainge is going to scrap his plan to rebuild this team using a healthy number of draft picks.
Still – come on. Admit it. The Cs are more fun to watch, and are just honest-to-goodness BETTER, than you or I thought they would be. So let’s hold a vote – what grade would you assign coach Stevens right now? Vote, and then let me hear your rationale in the comments below, or @theamazingMrS! Thanks, and get ready for tonight’s game!!!
