John Lucas III….Son of an NBA…legend? Hardly. Son of a former player, we’ll give him that. And we’ll also grant him the fact that he is a fearless shooter, a guy who would probably average 60 in the D-league, against inferior talent with his propensity for jacking it up. One thing Lucas may yet become is a Boston Celtic. According to Chris Tomasson of FOX Sports, the Celtics have expressed interest in Lucas.
At his best, Lucas can provide scoring in heaps, and that is always valuable off an NBA bench. So perhaps the move makes sense on some levels for the Celtics. He won’t provide defense, ball distribution, nor contribute to chemistry, but he will come cheap, where ever he ends up. The Bulls reached the end of the line with Lucas after his numerous bad shots and poor decisions, but Lucas did record four 20+ point games, and that kind of scoring could prove useful off the bench.
Celtics coach Doc Rivers will likely twist his stomachs in knots after taking Rajon Rondo out, but he does anyway. At least Lucas could provide some scoring if things get stale. It’s not the kind of move that will propel the C’s past the Heat as contenders, but ironically the Heat are one of the other teams interested in Lucas. We’ll see what happens.
