This is a Boston Celtics blog, and not very often will you catch me writing about something that doesn’t have to do with the guys in green. Today is going to be an exception to that, mostly because I am a strong supporter of Allen “The Answer” Iverson. As you can see in my article Allen Iverson a Boston Celtics, over on our other site Gino’s Jungle, I was part of the minority of Celtics fans that wanted AI in green. Today, however, all hopes of that happening diminished.
Today people all around the web have been reporting that Allen Iverson has accepted a one-year, non-guaranteed contract to return back to the Philadelphia 76ers. Did any of us really think AI was done forever? I know I didn’t, at 34 years old AI still has quite a bit in his tank and is ready to prove it on the team where he originally created his fame.
It is believed the 76ers were interested in AI because of a recent injury to their starting guard, Lou Williams. Williams is going to be out at least eight weeks with the injury and it is assumed that AI will get the majority of the playing time at guard during this time. My biggest question is what will happen when Williams returns? Will Iverson earn his job as a starter during these eight weeks? Will he accept a bench role once Williams returns? Or Will he pull what he did in Memphis and quit because he can’t handle a bench role?
These are all questions that will soon be answered, for now I am just happy that AI is back to playing on the hardwood. The Celtics will get their first glimpse of Iverson on December 18th, as they travel to Philly for the third game between the teams. You have to expect that this move will increase ticket sales for a team that struggles to fill up half the building at times. If AI can return as the player we all know he can be the Celtics might not be the only team making the playoffs from the, always knocked, Atlantic Division.
