Boston Celtics dud: Josh Richardson

When the Boston Celtics made the move to acquire Josh Richardson from the Dallas Mavericks this past offseason, we at HH were rather positive about the transaction.

Throughout his seven years in the association, he has proven to be a quality two-way wing who can lock down his assignment when on defense and cleanly stroke the open trey when on offense (36 percent career shooter from deep).

While he has, indeed showcased his sound defensive chops during the first two preseason outings of his career thus far with the shamrocks. In fact, he has yet to make a single one of his 3-point attempts.

In 20 minutes, the 28-year-old put up a stat line of seven points, six rebounds, two assists, and two steals on 3-5 shooting from the floor and 0-2 shooting from deep.

Again, while he has still managed to show off his solid defensive chops, this alone is not the reason why the Cs opted to trade assets (regardless of how big or small they were) to take on his $11.6 million contract this summer.

Over the past couple of years, Richardson’s value within the league has diminished rather considerably due to his long-range shooting woes (has shot at a mere 33.5 percent clip since 2019).

Should he continue on this path, like it appears he currently is, it’s only a matter of time before the Boston Celtics may look back with regret when it comes to their decision to deal for him in the first place.
