Boston Celtics offseason free-agent target #2: Spencer Dinwiddie

Since joining the Brooklyn Nets, Spencer Dinwiddie has been one of the most reliable role players in the NBA. Frequently, he has stepped into the starting point guard spot out of necessity due to various injuries to the guys in front of him.

Last season, Dinwiddie kept the Nets afloat before the coronavirus pandemic forced the season into suspension and helped secured them a postseason slot before the team trotted out the likes of Chris Chiozza and Lance Thomas as starters in the bubble.

Brooklyn looks unfamiliar now, though, with Kyrie Irving and James Harden sharing ball-handling duties in the starting lineup. Dinwiddie’s role will likely never be as substantial with all of the guys in the Nets lineup in the need of touches and shot attempts.

After tearing his ACL, Dinwiddie naturally lost his role, and if the Nets win a title without him, they may forgo whatever he is looking for on his next deal. They already have the perenially injured Irving and Kevin Durant in their lineup. Investing in so many players with serious past injuries is a risky play.

Should Dinwiddie hit the open market, he figures to make in the ballpark of what he currently rakes in. The Cs should make room for him and roll the dice on a short-term deal with team options and/or incentives and hope he remains to be one of the best pick-and-roll ball-handlers in the league.
