Boston Celtics C Moritz Wagner

On the Washington Wizards earlier this season, Moritz Wagner struggled to crack the rotation in the nation’s capital even after Thomas Bryant went down with a torn ACL.

Struggling to take Robin Lopez’s minutes, Wagner was a bit player for one of the worst teams in the NBA. Now, he finds himself on a team desperately clawing their way out of an early-season hole to reclaim their spot as a bona fide Eastern Conference contender.

In his debut with the Cs, Wagner struggled with his shot but was able to score a 3-point bucket and grab five rebounds in nine and a half minutes of action. His three turnovers were head-scratching, but the overall effort was good from the new #20.

Games like that won’t earn him a postseason role, although showing off his 3-point shot can at least have Brad Stevens momentarily consider playing him alongside Robert Williams in the second unit.

At this point, it’s obvious Wagner will be a journeyman in his career. Whether or not the Cs are the ones paying him is another question, though. His first two games haven’t been inspiring so far.

Verdict: Release his cap hold in the offseason.
