Boston Celtics draft target #3: Day’Ron Sharpe, C, UNC

Finally, UNC’s Day’Ron Sharpe rounds out Buckley’s list, and like Jones, Sharpe profiles as a throwback big man that passes and shoots out of the post.

While no one would confuse Sharpe with Nikola Jokic,  he has shown the ability to find fellow big men in the paint for easy buckets. Not only that, Sharpe runs the floor well and can finish in transition like a guard. Sporting a back-to-the-basket game that could result in easy points in isolation, Sharpe could provide second-unit scoring down low for whatever team drafts him.

That said, the Cs may want to hold off on adding someone like Sharpe with their first-round draft pick. Sharpe had more turnovers than assists in 2020-21 and oftentimes struggled to pass out of double teams in his freshman season.

While the turnovers could be worked on in the pros, his lack of a 3-point shot would give Brad Stevens’ coaching staff (or any potential replacement should Stevens depart) a lot of work to do, and a lot of lineup shuffling to compensate–assuming he can even coexist with another big man on the floor.

There are teams that could use a player with the size, athleticism, and defensive chops Sharpe offers, but there should be superior options on the board when Boston is on the clock.
