Why the Boston Celtics do it

Once upon a time, Christian Wood was seen as an option for the Boston Celtics in free agency.

That once upon a time happened this past November, when the Cs were actually the betting favorites to land the talented big man out of UNLV.

Instead of making a play for Wood, the team instead settled on Tristan Thompson for a few million dollars less. Of course, the salary cap is the reason why, but knowing Wood was that cheap, Danny Ainge should have done more to be the team to steal him off the market.

Houston could see Wood as a foundational piece, but they could also sell him high–with Wood scoring at least 20 points in six of his last seven contests.

Why the Houston Rockets do it

As mentioned, Wood can either be a foundational piece for the Rockets franchise moving forward, or he can be used to further the team’s rebuild.

In this situation, several first-round picks would qualify as the perfect way to justify dealing away a value contract like the one Wood signed (three years, $41 million).

The rest of the return haul is mostly filler, but Romeo Langford and Robert Williams could be long-term fits in H-Town.
