Brad Wanamaker

Somehow, the Boston Celtics have fancied themselves as legitimate contenders with a top five record in the league with 30-year-old second-year point guard Brad Wanamaker as the primary backup point guard. That isn’t meant to be a knock to the career journeyman, it just speaks to how impressive the C’s scouting department has been in finding such a diamond in the rough.

Good things don’t last forever, though, and eventually the C’s will have to find a more modern option at the floor general role on the second unit. While they have two young point guards in the G-League in Carsen Edwards and Tremont Waters, neither is a lock to be the answer off the bench at the 1-spot.

Wanamaker may not be due for a large contract offer, but the C’s may be better off finding a young cheap talent on a rookie scale contract. The draft could supply that late in the first round with someone like Nico Mannion out of Arizona or Malachi Flynn out of San Diego State.

If one of those two could provide decent minutes as low-turnover options, the C’s could continue to groom Edwards as a combo guard with a scoring punch and use the undersized Waters more sparingly as a third-stringer.

Either way, Wanamaker likely doesn’t fit the mold of a long-term fit in Boston. It is best that Danny Ainge begins to find someone that can grow into the system, as opposed to someone who has already established who they are in their professional career.
