Javonte Green

Players of Javonte Green‘s profile figure to suffer the worst of the post-coronavirus cutbacks. Teams may give pause handing out guaranteed money to career journeyman. In Green’s case, he was a journeyman in smaller international leagues before finally latching on with the 2019-20 Boston Celtics via a red hot start to the preseason.

It was during exhibition play that Green earned his spot on the roster due to red hot shooting from the 3-point line. Hitting his first eight shots from beyond the arc, Green gave C’s fans hope that they had found a legitimate backup for Jaylen Brown, Gordon Hayward and Jayson Tatum.

Unfortunately, Green’s numbers stagnated in regular season play. While he certainly hustled and played hard enough to sometimes be the first forward off the bench, his shortcomings were often glaring.

Besides being an springy athlete with the ability to hammer down transition and backdoor cut jams, he didn’t show anything resembling his preseason 3-point ability, making 26 percent of his looks from beyond the arc.

That he is already 26 is damning for his place on the team. The C’s have three upcoming first round picks after having four picks in last year’s NBA Draft. Green’s development might not be enough to justify a spot on the roster.
