3 players who could one day play alongside Jayson Tatum on the Boston Celtics
Trae Young
Easily the most exciting name on this list, Trae Young is already an All-Star starter and one of the league’s brightest young stars. Currently averaging 29.6 points and nine assists, Young is the the next great point guard in a league that is increasingly being defined by the position.
Young’s ascent has been rapid after starting his rookie year off with a troubled transition to the professional level. His 3-point shot has rounded into form as he is shooting 36 percent on over nine 3-point attempts per game, a marked improvement over his 32 percent clip beyond the arc last season.
The only thing that hasn’t gone well for Young is his winning percentage. After the Atlanta Hawks fell into the lottery and selected two top 10 picks in the 2019 draft, the losing continued this season and it bothered Young to the point that the team had to make win-now moves to placate him.
After acquiring Clint Capela and Dewayne Dedmon, the losing continued and the Hawks lost four of its last five games before the season was suspended. Being that Young was already frustrated with the franchise in its second year, it may only be a matter of time before he grows bothered enough to request a trade.
While the Boston Celtics are already set at point guard, it’s no secret that Kemba Walker is only getting older and moving further away from his athletic prime. If Young ever became available in a deal, Ainge should do everything possible to pair him with Tatum to form one of the league’s most prolific one-two punches.
