Luke Kennard

What better way is there to placate your superstar than by bringing back an old college friend? Tatum’s teammate from his days at Duke–Luke Kennard–could be a low-risk, high-reward gamble for the Boston Celtics if he ever became available.

His current team, the Detroit Pistons, is currently a mess of a franchise. They recently traded away their long-time cornerstone in Andre Drummond in a deal that brought back Jon Henson and the expiring contract of Brandon Knight along with a second round pick.

To not bring back a single notable asset shows just how inept the front office is in the Motor City. Kennard is one of the few noteworthy young stars in Detroit, but with the ball currently in the hands of Derrick Rose, his development might not accelerate much in the coming years.

Perhaps that makes him a damaged asset that the C’s can sign on the cheap. Who knows? Maybe a late-first rounder could be enough to pry the former Blue Devil away from the Pistons and into the Boston Celtics rotation.

No matter the case, adding Kennard would be a sign to Tatum that he is the centerpiece of the C’s, and welcoming a teammate that thrived alongside him in college would go a long way to keeping Tatum loyal to Beantown.
