Karl-Anthony Town

Lastly, we have another top-tier talent at center — see the pattern here? — that has been rumored to be on the trading block recently. Despite a recent statement from Karl-Anthony Towns himself saying he is committed to “be a Timberwolf” for the foreseeable future, we here at the Houdini believe that, for the right price, the All-Star big could be had.

Frankly, there are only a handful of people in the association that can be deemed “untouchable” and, despite his obvious skill and star-power, he is not one of them.

Sure, a return package for Towns would be steep, and would probably require the inclusion of Jayson Tatum or Jaylen Brown as a starting point, but with the fact that the franchise is likely to see talented big men like Giannis Antetokounmpo and Joel Embiid in the postseason while currently rostering no players who can stop them, the thought must, at the very least, be entertained, as KAT would certainly be enough to slow those aforementioned players down.

So far in 2019-20, the fifth year pro is logging himself yet another phenomenal season, boasting numbers of 26.5 points, 11.7 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 1.3 blocks per game on 51% shooting from the field and an impressive 42% from deep. He has been the lone bright-spot — as usual — for this Minnesota Timberwolves team and looks to be headed to his third consecutive All-Star game.

The Wolves find themselves in the West’s 13th seed with a mediocre record of 15-26. Couple this with previous rumors of unhappiness from Towns, and you may have the set up for Minnesota to seek the start of a rebuild — or, perhaps, major retooling.

Again, a deal to get the 24-year-old to Boston would cost a lot but, hey, this is a piece about blockbuster deals the Celtics could make and this would certainly be that: a blockbuster deal.

A package of Jayson Tatum, Gordon Hayward and two or three future first round picks for Karl-Anthony Towns and, perhaps, Robert Covington is seemingly a very beneficial deal for both parties. Boston gets their answer at center with one of the best young players in the game today for years to come and a solid 3-and-D wing to include into the rotation while the Timberwolves set themselves up quite nicely for the future by adding a potential franchise cornerstone in Tatum, a very solid veteran in Hayward and a couple of future first round picks.

Would trading away a man of Tatum’s potential sting? Of course! However, imagining a potential lineup of Kemba Walker, Marcus Smart, Jaylen Brown, Covington and Towns softens the blow a little bit.

Again, I’m not suggesting the Celtics should do this. However, it’s something the Boston’s front office, and it’s fans, should think about before tossing the idea into the trash.
