Reunion with Boston Celtics fan favorite unlikely but interesting to speculate on

A Boston Celtics reunion with former MVP candidate and TD Garden fan favorite Isaiah Thomas is "unlikely," according to Boston.com's Kaley Brown, but is still something that's interesting to speculate on. Brown was responding to Thomas's insinuation that his leadership alone would get the Cs over the hump, even if he didn't play a single minute and instead chose to simply wear a Boston jersey.

"The Celtics can add a 15th man and fill their final roster spot with a player if they want to," Brown prefaced before saying, "While a reunion feels unlikely because Thomas has not played since 2022, it’s still an interesting move to speculate. Even if Thomas doesn’t 'play a single minute.'"

Thomas has long been advocating for another go-round with the Celtics, though he has also been floating his name out for other openings over the years.

In May 2022, Thomas revealed that while he's wanted a return to the Cs, that feeling is one-sided.

“I’ve opened my arms to try and come back in so many ways,” Thomas said. “I’ve felt there’s been times where Brad [Stevens] could make a call and give me an opportunity and it hasn’t happened.”

Boston Celtics not likely to tinker too much with first place roster

Adding Thomas would be a spectacular development for the city of Boston, but it'd also be a potential distraction for a Celtics locker room that has proven itself throughout the season to be the team to beat.

The pecking order in Boston is clear: Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown are 1 and 1A, Kristaps Porzingis is the next go-to, and then Derrick White. Al Horford and Jrue Holiday are fringe All-Star level role players at this point. Where does The King of the Fourth fit into this?

Unfortunately, he simply doesn't right now. If this team doesn't get over the hump this June? Thomas's leadership would be a perfect blockbuster in the offseason to bolster morale and change the locker room dynamic.

Until then, don't fix what's not broken.
