The Boston Celtics have the best record in the NBA at the All-Star break, yet their top MVP candidate, Jayson Tatum is on the outside looking in with just two months left in the regular season.

Tatum was outside the top five in voting in ESPN’s latest MVP straw poll, and he sits behind players like Luka Doncic, Nikola Jokic, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Giannis Antetokounmpo in the latest NBA MVP odds.

Boston’s success as a team has been terrific, but does it warrant Tatum for more consideration to win the MVP this season?

Should Jayson Tatum get more love in NBA MVP conversation?

While Tatum’s scoring numbers are down compared to last season, he’s averaging more assists per game and shooting a better percentage from the field and from 3-point range.

Boston also has far and away the best record in the NBA, which is a huge plus for Tatum when it comes to the “team success” aspect of the NBA MVP award. All but two winners of the NBA’s MVP award since 1983 have come from a top three seed in their respective conference.

Still, oddsmakers are far from sold on Tatum, especially since his great supporting cast has led to him having less of a burden to help Boston win each and every night. His numbers pale in comparison to Jokic and Doncic, and he doesn’t even rank in the top 10 players in the league in Player Impact Estimate this season.

Tatum could still win the award if voters value how great Boston has been overall this season, but it seems more like a team award than one that Tatum should be recognized for individually.

He may be worth a sprinkle at his current odds considering how low they are for the best player on the league’s best team, but Tatum is facing an uphill battle to win his first MVP.
